Jasmine

I was born to beat up bad guys!

-- Jasmine

Jasmine, also known as Number One to the public, is a famous psychic who've defeated a great villain one year ago. Such a success at young age ended up giving her a sort of impostor syndrome, as there was no one else who dared to challenge her ever since.

Backstory

Jasmine awakened to her powers at age of 12, her unusually potent Telekinesis ended up destroying near vicinity of her neighborhood, miraculously however there was no casualties. It was then when Edmund, a professional psychic researcher, was sent to defuse the situation and make sure the girl will be able to handle her powers on her own. He was successful.

The girl was allowed to continue her life as normal, but due to her newfound powers, she would have to wear a psychic suppressor device at her at all times when outside as well as visiting a Psychic Bureau every now and then to make sure she is developing decent control over them as well.

To their surprise, she was a prodigy. Very early on, she had basically no need to wear the suppressor anymore, however, Jasmine developed a new power in the meantime. Ability to read feelings, Empathy. She found it bothersome, thinking that she will lose connection with other people if she can just figure out what they feel at any time, therefore deciding to keep the device.

For the next five years, nothing special happened in her life, save for her discovering her third and final ability. Teleportation. She also developed a sibling-like relationship with Edmund, who provided guidance to her whenever she was in the Psychic Bureau.

Then, at the age of 17. Jasmine just so happened to stop by the Psychic Bureau before going back home, to the south where her family lives. It was then when a great villain, known as Overtimer, went to the streets with his psychic cadres and wrecked havoc on the streets of Paris. Psychic Bureau did not let that slip, and sent out their own agents in response. Although many of the Overtimer's allies fell in battle, he appeared untouchable as he went up each floor of the Bureau.

Jasmine, being just a kid who should probably just go back home, was told by Edmund to leave while she still has time. She however, felt like she can make a difference here and refused to go. Edmund couldn't bear to let a child fight their fight and attempted to convince her, but before he was able to do that, Overtimer has breached the floor they were on. It is uncertain what exactly happened after that, but about an hour later, the tip of Eiffel tower was cut horizontally, and Overtimer laid unconscious in the Elysian Fields.

And besides him who? Jasmine, now the officially youngest member of the Psychic bureau. At least that's what the journalists thought.

To this day, that event is Jasmine's greatest source of pride, and Edmund's biggest regret.

Personality

Jasmine is an outgoing girl who loves to chat just about anything, her positive vibes tend to spread quickly which tremendously helps her with first impressions. This is especially helpful in man TV appearances she had attended.

She isn't much of a planner but tends to make good decisions on the fly, even though she is a bit of an airhead if a topic doesn't interest her.
It's fair to say that she lives in the moment.

Unfortunately, she hides a bit of an impostor syndrome, having not accomplished much since the events that befell on her a year ago. She tries to show, mostly to herself, that she indeed is the superhero worth media's attention. But she always aims to high, and small worldly issues tend to slip her mind.

She rarely mentions it, but due to the nature of her powers and their ability to influence reality, she took really well to Math and Physics. Though this is more of a hobby than a serious career at the moment, but she will mention it if she feels like the person she talks to is "enough of a nerd".

Abilities

Telekinesis

Telekinesis is, basically, an ability to cover something with pure psychic power and move it around. As it turns out, such power has a lot of flexibility. Jasmine can grab things and throw them, hold herself up and levitate, even create a psychic shield to protect herself from damage (even use said shield to make her kicks stronger). Jasmine is pretty good with figuring out new ways to apply this power on the move as well.

Generally, it does what you'd expect from a classic Shōnen Hero or a Pulp Sci-fi. Protective and offensive coating, plus some ranged capabilities.

Teleportation

Jasmine can cross small distances instantly or take her time and take longer leaps through space. Such a "jump" carries all the momentum she built up before the teleportation occurs, letting her charge up a kick or a particularly nasty punch.

For how it looks, think of Instant Transmission or Sonido.

Empathy

The ability to feel someone else's feelings and vice versa, incredibly helpful if she were ever to be in dire need to understand someone quickly... Unfortunately, she quite dislikes using this ability, it is literally a last resort to her if normal communication fails with someone especially tough to crack.

This ability only lets her only understand feelings however! She can't read thoughts, but may know the intent.

Restriction, the one and only weakness.

Usually, a psychic of her world may become more powerful by shaping their general power into something more specific. A pyrokinetic may change the fuel of their flame, a telekinetic may add properties to their power to make it less predictable. However, Jasmine didn't do that consciously.
Her powers were potent on the awakening, true, but it wasn't that much out of the ordinary, perhaps 10% higher potency than average child, albeit with talent for controlling them already. But in the distress caused by her house being ripped in half, she figured that if psychic powers are the ability to influence reality through her perception, she could make them easier to control if she reduced her perception. And so, she covered her eyes with her fluffy hair.

But instead making them weaker, easier to control. The power skyrocketed as the restriction was created, from that point on, her powers were tied to her Sight. If she can perceive something, she can put extreme amount of power into it. This means, stronger telekinetic force, quicker teleportation and farther distance she could travel, even better connection through her empathy.

Jasmine is fully aware of that, were she to fight a serious battle, she would use her flower hair accessory to tie her left side instead. Allowing for full unobstructed view of her opponent.

She can still use her powers if she doesn't see, but if that were to happen, they become quite ordinary.

Strengths

Kindness

Jasmine has a gentle nature, she will try to see the best in people even if she thinks they may be a bit weird. She will always be nice and attempt to understand people

Bravery

Even long before she learned how powerful she truly was, Jasmine was always full of courage. Even if she were to face overwhelming odds (which she doesn't believe can even occur), she will give it her all.

Intelligence

Jasmine is quite sharp when it comes to STEM, she never pursued the field due to her status as a Regulator. But it didn't stop her from further reading in order to better understand her powers. She has no trouble figuring things out on the fly, as long as they follow any kind of logic.

Weaknesses

Narcissism

Unfortunately, all the fame and attention she gotten as a teen got to her head a bit. She tends to think of herself as the center of the world, she craves admiration and believes herself to be superior to the others. It's not uncommon for her to think that she is above all the rules for "common folk".

Naivety

Jasmine comes from quite a peaceful world, there was never a need to develop a sense for "shady" people. Especially since she haven't fought any villain in what seems to be ages for her. As such, she could be lead on by a decent liar. However! She's not stupid and should be able to figure out if something's amiss.

Lack of self expression

Jasmine figured that she is a "hero with cool powers", she doesn't need any of that self expression stuff. She never tried writing, drawing or painting, she doesn't really go out with anyone, she can't even ride her skateboard properly without her powers. Obviously, she still has a bit of craving to try these from time to time, especially if she sees someone performing them.

Author's Notes

  • When creating Jasmine, I mostly thought of Shonen Jump heroes with a tint of classic Sci-fi psychic characters. I wanted to put my own spin on these tropes that I love so much.
I thought it'd be really fun if the hero reached their peak prematurely and had to deal with consequences of that, instead of seeking more power to protect who they love, peaking too early and being lost in the world. Just like a shonen hero who became too strong, Jasmine too struggles with relating to normal people who don't have the same burden of power as her. But unlike those heroes, she doesn't really have friends who can back her up. Only Edmund, who she cares about dearly but has difficulty opening up to. She needs someone either around her age or with greater understanding of what power is, to find herself. To become Jasmine the Friend instead of Jasmine the Hero.
  • The main inspirations for Jasmine are Medaka (Medaka Box), Hina (Hinamatsuri) and Mob (Mob Psycho).

Glossary

Some terms that I made up for the story and have nowhere to put:

  • Regulator - A Psychic Bureau agent whose main job is to neutralize rogue psychics, they often have powers but it's not a necessity with the marvels of modern technology.
  • Negator - Basically a rogue psychic who commited a crime.
  • Spreem - Slang for Supreme, basically used like we say "cool" today.
