Ori

You’re proof that we still have one last card to play. Proof that we were here. You’re the last laugh, Ori.

-- Arika Ashling

An artificial ‘demon’ in human form, created as a final memorial and possible salvation for a doomed world. She carries virtually all information of that world, and makes full use of it through her abilities as a summoner. Whatever emotions lie behind her ghostly eyes, her mission is to one day summon her home world in its entirety.

Backstory

Ori is from what was once the world of Iktia, and place of all manner of developing magic and technology, but was doomed by an invading interdimensional demon god. As a last act of defiance against an unavoidable fate, Iktia’s greatest came together and created the ‘Origin Project’, or simply ‘Ori’, an artificial demon designed into the shape of a human. Ori was created with three directives in mind:

  • To survey all of Iktia and record it down to the last speck of dust.

  • To persist past Iktia’s destruction and survive in an environment fit only for demons.

  • To continue developing herself until she gained the capacity to use her abilities and summon Iktia anew (minus the world ending bits), hence “saving the world”.

Under the mentorship of her master, Arika Ashling, and many of Iktia’s heroes and nations, Ori traversed the entire world and recorded as much of it as possible before its eventual demise. Afterwards, she continued to survive on Iktia’s remains, fighting off scavenging demons and gathering power so that she might one day complete the final part of her mission.

Some time after Iktia fell to ruin, Ori used her records of Arika Ashling to summon a ‘version’ of her late mentor. This summon had the physical form of Arika’s younger self mixed with the memories of Arika at the end of her lifetime. The result was a different personality whom Ori began to regard more like an older sister or best friend.

Personality

Up front, Ori comes off as an aloof, chipper, and somewhat clumsy individual. But anyone who spends enough time with her will begin to notice the oddities behind the cheerfulness. She doesn’t seem to outwardly exhibit other emotions such as shock, sadness, or anger. She practically never blinks and behaves like she has eyes on the back of her head. It is as if she is wearing a mask that is shaped to smile.

The cheerful mask isn’t there to be deceptive or to hide malicious intent. Rather she developed it as a means for facilitating social encounters. Past it, a person might notice they are being given an inordinate amount of attention when conversing with her.

Despite the odd front, Ori is capable of emotions. It is simply that expressing them is difficult for Ori, if she even tries to express them at all. The one feeling that shows through most earnestly is curiosity, as Ori’s mood will brighten more noticeably when her interest is piqued.

Abilities

First Class Recon Unit

Ori was physically designed and trained to do two things: Survey and Survive.

  • Demon Senses - Ori has incredible senses and observational skills. She was designed to passively intake and process an overwhelming amount of information that would otherwise be unhealthy to an ordinary person.
  • Evasive Maneuvers - Ori’s main job was not combat. Ori’s master focused her training regiment on sheer agility. This meant hurling all manner of danger at Ori, hurling Ori at danger, or both. As a result Ori has mastered use of her small frame to traverse difficult terrain, avoid attacks, and even how to take attacks.
Archivist Summoner

Ori is a special type of summoner mage. Her abilities are reliant on the relationship between herself and her tools. That is; Ori, the Book, and the Quill. As an accompanying analogy, consider these the Interfacing Device, the Data Server, and a simple Paint Program, respectively. She can freely levitate them (it's fun at parties)

  • Ori’s Mana Pool - The ‘Interfacing Device” - Whereas most mages might exhaust a resource like stamina, what Ori has is closer to the memory limits of a computer device. Ori allocates this magic bandwidth for use of her tools and summons. Summons can exist perpetually so long as she isn’t exceeding her limits. Exceeding her bandwidth can result in stress and damage to her body.
  • “The Tale of Iktia” - The “Data Server” - This unassuming, thick, hardcover book can record and store a virtually infinite amount of information. Ori can create and summon anything recorded with sufficient detail as a magical construct.

The book contains the detailed contents of the entire world of Iktia. This means Ori has access to all manner of objects, creatures, people, machines, phenomena, etc. The bandwidth cost is determined by the size and complexity of the summon. The higher the cost, the more time is needed to ‘load’ the summon, sometimes seconds, sometimes minutes. She can reduce the cost or restore bandwidth by paring down on a summon’s functions, before or after summoning.

EX: ‘Living’ summons are typically not given fully functional intelligence as it would be exponentially costly. Hence, a summoned knight would operate on muscle memory and simple directives, incapable of conversation. Ori has only ever made one exception to this; a summon of her master, Ari.

When destroyed or dismissed, summons return to nothing and return their allotted bandwidth

  • The Ink Quill - The “Free Paint Program” - A tool that produces a magic ink Ori can use to create attacks, defenses, and distractions. While creations are typically sloppy and not too sturdy, it has proven to be excellent utility in a pinch. It’s also very cheap on Ori’s resources.

Strengths

  • Exceedingly Sharp - Ori has exceptional sensory and observational skills. Very little escapes her senses and she is quick to process that which she observes.

  • Open Mind - Very little seems to faze Ori as she is innately built to consume everything as data. This also means she tends to treat everyone equally.

  • Extra Seasoned - Having traversed an entire world within a lifetime and continuing to survive on its apocalyptic remains for another, Ori has a lengthy resume of experiences.

  • Demon Strategist and Tactician - All things considered, Ori has become frighteningly capable at planning and adapting to situations, capable of thinking several steps ahead on the fly.

Weaknesses

  • Minimal Strength Build  - Ori is the equivalent of putting 0 extra points into strength for a game. She only has just enough strength to efficiently and effectively apply her agility.

  • Artificial Body - Rather than bleeding, Ori’s body cracks and breaks into mana. Repairing can be a complicated process and exceeding her mana pool can cause further complications

  • Summoning Bias - Ori usually doesn’t consider 100% the data in her storage. Her choices in summons are often a little biased towards fun over optimization.

  • Hater of Loneliness - Spending a lengthy amount of time in a post-apocalypse has made her prone to loneliness, leading her to behave uncharacteristically and a bit “off”.

Author's Notes

  • “The Tale of Iktia” has received such a high concentration of information that it has become ludicrously heavy and dense. It may perhaps make for a great shield, or weapon. Not that Ori would do that as her master would always tell her to treat the book well… but sometimes intrusive thoughts be like >:3

  • Ori’s horn was originally used to interface with the large-scale mechanisms used to help record Iktia. Currently it serves no purpose outside of signifying that she is technically a demon.

  • She was inspired by Laplace’s Demon

  • Ori cannot record her own summons. Doing so would likely cause corruption or contradiction of the original data.
