Chiifu

Working hard, or hardly working? Haha... I know you work hard, I can see it in your hands. Why not take a night off to relax with a drink? I know the best place~ Come with me to the Fox Den, Saki's the best bartender in all of Crossroads! She'll make something special, just for you~"

-- Chiifu

A sly vixen with an incredibly keen eye. Her cherry red hair frames her face and is tied back loosely in a ponytail, resembling a fox's tail. She always accessorizes with a white flower (known by some as a "lunar tear"). While her outfits vary, she often dons darker garments with floral patterns, and always wears platform heels with bells embedded. Her presence is always announced by the chiming of these bells.

Backstory

Not much is known of her origins, and she is dodgy on the topic. She'll call herself a humble ordinary fox of no importance, and leave it at that.

Persona

A simple, humble trickster with an excellent observant eye. Chiifu pretends to not be the biggest figure in town by donning disguises and intermingling with the people of Crossroads. She loves to chill at her favorite bar and casually chat with the local populace and tournament competitors. It's very important to keep up with all the latest gossip! She holds no malice or ill-intent towards the citizens; she simply wishes the best for everyone, and hopes that they can have fulfilling lives in Crossroads. (She's a firm practitioner of servant leadership.)

However, her attitude towards tournament competitors differs; many of them can be threats to Crossroads. Even if she doesn't show it, she's cautious around new competitors and will tease them to test their boundaries-- then, once she has a better grasp of their personality, will tailor her responses more to the individual. Whether she intends to hinder or encourage the competitor is related to if they intend to harm or benefit Crossroads, respectively. Chiifu is not above laughing and mocking a competitor's wish, if she happens to overhear the desire.

She's good at keeping her secrets, despite being frequently buzzed (and giggly), and enjoys keeping an air of mystery around herself. She's also found that others seem more loose-lipped around her "drunken" state, and absolutely doesn't use that to her advantage! And she absolutely isn't related to the Madame of Crossroads...! What accusations, oh my...

Chiifu is a true chaotic neutral; she does what she finds to be most interesting at a given time. She finds most things interesting, actually, and anything that has stakes or conflict is amusing to her.

Abilities

Illusionary Magic

Chiifu has always possessed illusory magic-- however, it wasn't until she came into her current form that she was able to wield it much more easily. She's able to change her appearance and clothes on a dime, and can entertain others with party tricks. Casting projections requires more effort, but isn't impossible (that's what Miss X is, after all). Are her illusory clothes tangible? Well, they feel real... if you ever have the chance to get that close.

God Eater Abilities

Chiifu is still fully capable of wielding her God Eater abilities, but using that amount of magic tends to reveal her more magnificent form. She'll excuse herself from a situation that calls for the God Eater's presence, create an illusory double to allow herself to "exist" at two different states in time. Regardless, she'll never give up her secret-- that she's also the Madame of Crossroads, the God Eater.

Job & Skills

Due to her nature, Chiifu is often masquerading as the Chief of Crossroads' Crossguards. This allows her to get to know the Crossguards on a personal basis and wander the town, helping its citizens with tasks. She always seems to know the perfect solution or has the perfect trick up her sleeve to solve a problem, but prefers others to take the lead on solving issues. The Crossguards joke that she does no work, but she's a welcome presence out in the field.

Her sleight of hand is something to not be seen-- any slight tricks she pulls are invisible to the eye. A useful skill in her schemes and teases.

Location

When not pretending to work, Chiifu hangs out at Saki's bar, the famous Fox Den of Crossguards. (The Madame of Crossroads is rumored to frequent the VIP room upstairs!) She has her "spot" at the bar, which is wherever Saki is busiest serving customers. Apparently she's racked up enough of a tab that Saki often puts her to work as a barmaid, though... Ah, the worst punishment-- surrounded by the substance you love, yet can't partake in.

Author's Notes

"Chiifu" was erroneously spelled as "Chifu" during the first season (2021)-- it was pointed out early in the season's run, but too late to correct.

The "Chiifu" persona demonstrates her true personality and attitude toward life. She's here to enjoy life in the present, and that involves having a flourishing community around her. The "God Eater" persona demonstrates her true power and origins. She clearly distinguishes between the two personas so that one aspect of her is not a detriment to the other. (Who would take seriously a goddess who constantly loves being drunk? Who would want to freely interact with a dimension-bending deity walking among their midst?) Plus, it allows her to see the two faces that others frequently wear-- they mask they don when faced with authority, and the mask they wear when surrounded by friends.
